ARF focuses rescue efforts on animals at risk in public shelters, and does not accept animal surrenders from the public. Please see tips below for rehoming a pet.
Sometimes, unfortunate circumstances arise and you are unable to continue caring for your pet. If you can locate a new home on your own, you will be able to avoid taking your pet to an overcrowded shelter. For best results, allow as much time as possible to find a new home and use your personal network to help spread the word.
Was your pet adopted from ARF? ARF will support you through the difficult decision to return your pet. Read ARF's Adoption Return Policy or submit a return request.
ARF's courtesy listings offer 30-day adoption ads to members of the public who need to re-home their pet.
If your pet is a purebred or close to it, contact a rescue group specializing in that breed to see if they can offer support or rescue. There are rescue groups for virtually every breed of dog and cat, and most can be found through the internet.
Consider linking to your ad on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.).
You can also print your ad and distribute to places where animal lovers frequent, such as pet stores and veterinary offices.
Notify friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers that you are looking for a new home for your pet. Word of mouth networking is usually the most effective method.
